Last night I was at a meeting of the South Oxfordshire Positive Birth Movement. It was lovely to be in a space with other pregnant mamas and doulas with the aim of thinking and being positive about birth.
The Positive Birth Movement is a grass roots movement, spreading positivity about childbirth via a global network of free Positive Birth groups, linked up by social media. You can find out more here.
Positive Birth groups are open to anyone – whether you’re pregnant or not, if you’re pregnant with your first/second/third/… child, whether you’re planning a hospital, MLU or home birth. They’re an opportunity for people to get together, share information and challenge the culture of fear that surrounds birth, empowering women to approach birth differently.
The groups in my area usually have a theme for discussion each month – last night was ‘Rights in Birth’ – but we talk about whatever is on people’s minds too.
